Where Will The ASICS World Ekiden 2021 Take Place?

You won’t need to book a flight to Japan to run in the 2021 ASICS World Ekiden. This race will be a free virtual event — welcoming runners from all around the world! This marathon-distance relay race is open to all runners who wish to participate.

How Do I Register For The ASICS World Ekiden 2021?

Registering is made easy with the ASICS Runkeeper™ app on your mobile device, an app many runners also use to keep track of their progress as they prepare for the race. You can also register online through the event registration page.

How Many Runners Can Be On My Team?

Your team can have up to six people. However, if your team has fewer than six individuals, keep in mind that there are still six legs of the race: One or more teammates will have to compete in multiple legs of the competition.

How Do I Track My Virtual Run And Share My Results?

Both runners and their teammates can track their runs and keep record of their results using the ASICS Runkeeper™ app. The app can help monitor your pace and distance, but it can also keep you motivated: Insights can not only help you reflect on where you are in your training progress but also get you more excited for what’s to come.

Please note: In order to fully compete in this Ekiden relay, all six legs of the race must be documented completely and tracked using the Runkeeper™ app.

PILLAGA ULTRA: MOTHER NATURE TO HOST A NEW SERIES OF TRAIL RUNS https://runnerstribe.com/latest-news/pillaga-ultra-mother-nature-to-host-a-new-series-of-trail-runs/ Wed, 07 Apr 2021 05:35:31 +0000 https://www.runnerstribe.com/?p=49489 With only 100 places available, ‘The Pilliga Ultra; a run to keep the Pilliga Wild’, is a bucket-list, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run in a unique wild place, and stand united with the local community and Gamilaraay peoples against the destruction of our wild places.

Every runner loves a new race especially when it’s a challenge that helps you get fitter, run with and against others, whilst also protecting wild places.

The Pilliga Ultra series, created by the team who conceived the takayna Trail event (an event that has raised well over $600k to protect the majestic Tarkine rainforest) have just launched a 5km, 20km and 50km race to protect the beautiful Pilliga Forest in New South Wales from coal seam gas mining.

Advertisement image for tarkine.com

Half a million hectares of this rare intact temperate eucalypt woodland are under threat from mining company Santos’ plans to drill up to 850 coal seam gas wells in this ancient landscape.

At 95,000 hectares, the Narrabri Gas Project is the largest, by land area, ever proposed in NSW. It would be 38 times the size of Sydney, and would set a precedent that risks fast-tracking the destruction of our precious forests and wildlife.

All for the sake of a fossil fuel resource that threatens the future of our planet.

Fredrik Henttonen, Race Director said ’Trail runners are natural allies of the environment. The love for our sport literally depend on the health and wellbeing of our wild and natural places.

‘I’ve seen the power and motivation that trail runners have when they unite to protect the environment. Creating a series of races where runners directly contribute to the protection and conservation of these places simply by participating just made sense to us.

It was such an obvious, yet missing link that we hope will resonate with people.

Our sport, and our connection to it, depends on the survival of these environments.

An added focus of this years’ Series will be on social interaction and getting the trail running community back together again after an event hiatus last year.

In 2020, the Trail Running Series featured just two virtual trail running races due to COVID-19, so Rapid Ascent is looking forward to welcoming runners back to the trails, fresh-air and natural landscapes, with an emphasis on reconnecting with one another.

“We can’t wait to see the trail running community reconnect at the Series; to catch up with old and new friends, and share these amazing runs and race experiences together,” said General Manager Sam Maffett.

“Trail running brings people together and offers more than just the enjoyment on the trails – it’s the endorphins, the fitness and health opportunities, and most importantly the friendly social vibes and friendships that we all missed last year,” said Maffett.

The Series revolutionised trail running in Australia by taking it to the masses and continues to lead the way as one of Australia’s most popular trail running events.

Each event features a short course race that varies in length between 5km and 7km, a medium course race of between 10km and 15km and a long course race that starts at 15km and extends to 23km at its longest. Competitors can enter all races or choose just the races that suit them.

The 2021 Series includes:

·        RACE 1 Yarra Bend – Sunday 6 June: 5km / 11km / 15km

·        RACE 2 Smiths Gully – Sunday 11 July: 7km / 14km / 18km

·        RACE 3 Anglesea – Sunday 8 August: 8km / 15km / 23km and NEW Friendly 4km

·        RACE 4 Werribee Gorge (NEW VENUE) – Sunday 19 Sept: 6km / 9km / 14km

·        RACE 5 Silvan – Sunday 17 October: 7km / 15km / 21km and Kids Run

A large appeal of the Series is that it allows runners to become fully immersed in nature. Competitors will run on little known trails, down fun single tracks that pass through scenic landscapes of towering gum trees, trickling creeks, fern-lined valleys and native wildlife – all in a friendly event atmosphere.

These sentiments are echoed by competitors.

“I love the energy and vibe of the Trail Running Series; and I love being able to run in beautiful places I never knew existed!” said Mary, a yearly participant.

Each event offered an excuse to escape the city and to spend some mindful, quality time outdoors in the fresh air and nature. After each trail run I felt invigorated and inspired!” said Sarah, a 2019 participant.

Rapid Ascent looks forward to kicking things off again this June at Race 1. Further details on the Trail Running Series can be found on the event website at www.TrailRunningSeries.com.au with entries NOW OPEN for these five popular events.

Entries for the four-day, four-stage Run Larapinta Stage Race to be held on 26 – 29 August 2021 have now sold out.

Event organisers Rapid Ascent have a self-imposed field limit of 200 runners to preserve an intimate experience for all participants with this cap being reached late last week.

“We feel it is very important to preserve the experience for all runners rather than compromise the course for the sake of more people,” said Rapid Ascent General Manager, Sam Maffett.

“The timelessness of the landscape and the quiet stillness of running through the Red Centre is at the heart of the event and that is something we respect above all else. To have more than our 200 runner limit would detract from that and compromise runners’ experiences which would be a great shame,” added Maffett.

A limited number of entries are however still available in the ‘2020 Run Larapinta’ that is being conducted on 21 – 24 April 2021 after it was postponed due to COVID last year. Entries in the April event are nearing capacity with approximately 50 places remaining.

The popular stage race has developed a cult status among trail runners after being conceived only six years ago, and Rapid Ascent suggest that anyone who missed out on August to adjust their plans and come in April instead.

“It’s definitely become a bucket list event for both recreational and elite runners across Australia with the race taking in some of the most spectacular sections of the iconic Larapinta Trail in Australia’s Northern Territory,” said Maffett.

Two different course lengths are on offer: the Malbunka long course features stages of 19km – 46km each day and The Namatjira stages of 11km – 31km.

The race has been designed for runners of all types seeking a challenge in a spectacular part of the world.

“It is fair to say Run Larapinta is far more a running experience than a race. Yes, you can test yourself against your running compatriots and race for a place, but far more people will be in it for the spectacular experience of running through a timeless landscape,” added Maffett.

Participants doing the longer Malbunka stages will rack up more than 130kms of running in four days. Those choosing the shorter Namatjira stage will clock 80 kilometres of running on rugged terrain.

Run Larapinta was first held in 2015 when 78 runners took part. Exactly 200 runners are now expected to experience the red centre on foot in both April 21-24, and August 26-29 events.

In 2021 the ASB Christchurch Marathon will step back in order to move forward. For the first time since the earthquakes, participants will run on the traditional two lap course, and for the first time ever, the event moves to the earlier date of April 11th.

This is a continuation of the ASB Christchurch Marathon’s personal rebuild following the earthquakes. In 2011, the event was forced out of the central city event to the outskirts of Christchurch, first to Lincoln and then to Christchurch Airport. In 2015 the organisers brought the event back into the central city, basing it at Cathedral Square. In 2017 ASB Bank came on board as the principal sponsor, and in 2019 the event returned to its traditional race base at the Christchurch Town Hall.

In 2020, of course, everything including the ASB Christchurch Marathon was interrupted by Covid-19. “That was a big hit financially for the event,” says race director, Chris Cox, “But it also gave us some time to consider the future.”

Since returning to the central city, Cox and his crew had been working with local authorities to reclaim the traditional course. It took some time, but in 2019 the event returned to its Town Hall race base, and now in 2021, they finally return to the pre-earthquake race route.

Advertisement image for tarkine.com

“The course concept is very important,” says Cox. “Parts of it still run on the historic 1974 Commonwealth Games route, which was the inspiration for this event. That route is widely accepted as the fastest in New Zealand, but it is also very scenic and takes in iconic Christchurch areas such as Hagley Park, the Avon River, Oxford Terrace and the Town Hall. So it has everything!”

The only thing the ASB Christchurch Marathon hasn’t had, in fact, is good weather. The past four years have all seen bitter wind and rain. But that too is about to change.

“The ASB Christchurch Marathon has always been Queen’s Birthday Weekend, but terrible weather in recent years has really impacted participation. The numbers just have not built back to those pre-earthquake levels, so we decided the event needed to be at a nicer time of the year. So 2021’s 40th anniversary will be on April 11th.”

“With the traditional course but a new date, it really is a case of back to the future,” laughs Cox. “Taking that further, we’re really pleased to have ASB returning for its fifth year as the naming sponsor, and to announce a new charity partner in Trees That Count.”

Trees That Count is a nationwide native tree planting initiative established by the Project Crimson Trust.

CEO Adele Fitzpatrick says “Our breath-taking forests are part of the New Zealand experience, highly valued by Kiwis. From the Great Walks to our local reserves they provide us with places to exercise in, spend time with our families or simply to marvel at. We’re thrilled to be the charity partner for Christchurch Marathon and funds raised will enable us to extend our support to planting groups in the Canterbury region.”

Since it came on board as naming sponsor of the marathon, ASB has contributed each year to the local community through various initiatives. This includes its 2017 initiative ‘Run back the Tracks’ where the distance run by race entrants correlated to funding from ASB to help rebuild running tracks through the Port Hills, following fire damage earlier in the year.

ASB head of Community and Sponsorship Mark Graham says partnering with Trees that Count was a perfect fit.

“We’re incredibly proud to be the major partner of such an iconic Christchurch event, and to be able to give back to the community by working with Trees that Count to replant areas of Christchurch.

Advertisement: Tarkine Trail Devil

“Trees donated will be used to help restore the Avoca Valley in the Port Hills. The Valley is on the doorstep of Christchurch City and borders Rāpaki Track which has more than one million visitors a year. The reserve will include a range of tracks for the community, which we hope will be used for those wanting to train for future running events,” says Graham.

Race day for the 2021 ASB Christchurch Marathon is Sunday 11th April. Entries are open now at www.christchurchmarathon.co.nz

Melbourne, Australia; January 15 2021 – Sydney has today been announced as the 2021 host venue for Athletics Australia’s Australian Track and Field Championships, taking place from April 12-21.

The Australian Track and Field Championships is the largest annual athletics event in Australia and the Oceania region, traditionally attracting more than 3,500 athletes from across Australia and the Pacific.

With the 2020 Championships in Sydney being cancelled due to COVID-19, the home of the 2000 Games will now host the 2021 Championships in a COVID-safe event, which will act as a major hit out for athletes leading into the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Athletics Australia CEO Darren Gocher said despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, he is looking forward to the Australian athletics community reuniting as the nation’s best compete together once again.

“We know how difficult the last year has been for our track and field athletes in not being able to compete, which makes announcing the venue for the Australian Track and Field Championships all the more exciting,” Gocher said.

“We recognise that competition in Australia is still disrupted, but we are doing everything we possibly can to give athletes the opportunity to compete safely for national titles and of course, to qualify for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“The Australian Track and Field Championships is the highlight of our domestic season, and the culmination of another year of hard work and dedication from our athletes, so I want to thank the NSW Government for their collaboration and ongoing support in making this happen. Together, we will make this the best possible event that we can for the Australian athletics community.”

The Australian Track and Field Championships determine Australia’s best athletes in more than 1,000 events. The 2021 Championships will take place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre from April 12-21 and subject to no disruptions from COVID-19, will be the last chance for automatic qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

NSW Acting Minister for Sport, the Hon. Geoff Lee MP welcomed the 2021 Championships back to Sydney ahead of this year’s Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

“We want to give our NSW athletes the best possible chance to succeed and competing at this world-class facility gives them a great home advantage,” Mr Lee said.

“Having our future champions competing on the same stage as our Olympic and Paralympic legends will also ensure we promote a great legacy for athletics.

“We are super excited about welcoming the superstars of track and field to Sydney in 2021 for a COVID-safe event.”

The new event is open to everyone, not just athletics club members. It will feature a Community and Elite 5K as well as Junior races over 1k, 2k and 3k.

Although the cycling criterium track at Stromlo Forest Park is 1200m long, the course will be made up of 1km laps that avoid the most significant elevation gain on the circuit. The 1k lap has been marked out by an AIMS certified course measurer – making it eligible for official times and PB’s.

The surface on the circuit is smooth and fast, and with the event being held in the evening conditions will be as good as possible.

More information and entries into the Community event is available here

For entry into the elite race, contact Dan Wallis at eo.act@athletics.org.au

Runner’s Tribe will be featuring the profiles of the elite field in the lead-up to the event which will be livestreamed.

The magic of the Run Larapinta Stage Race awaits adventurous runners in 2021 with entries now open to two event dates after the 2020 event was postponed due to COVID-19.

The 4 day, 4 stage trail running race will be held on 21-24 April and 26-29 August both in 2021 – providing more people the opportunity to be part of this life-changing experience. The 2020 event was postponed and will in effect be replaced by the April race, whilst the August event is in the usual timeslot for 2021.

Run Larapinta Stage Race

As one of Australia’s most anticipated trail running stage races, organisers can’t wait to share the Outback experience twice-over!

“We are very excited to host two events in 2021,” said General Manager of Rapid Ascent, Sam Maffett. “Run Larapinta really is far more a running experience than a race. Yes, you can challenge yourself and race hard, but far more people do it for the opportunity to run MacDonnell Ranges with other people,” continued Maffett.

The trail running race has become a drawcard for both recreational and elite runners across Australia (and overseas) with the 2021 events both expected to reach their field limit of 200 runners per event date.

“It’s definitely become a bucket list event on the ultra running calendar, and it’s easy to see why!” said Maffett. “Participants come away with life-long friendships and an incredible sense of awe after spending time running through the timeless red centre landscape. It really is a unique event for any runner.”

The courses take in the most spectacular sections of the iconic Larapinta Trail in Australia’s Northern Territory in the heart of the West MacDonnell Ranges. It is rough and rocky terrain that is unlike any other landscape in Australia which is part of the drawcard for runners.

The event provides two different course length options: The Malbunka (long course) features stages varying between 19km – 46km each day and a total of 130km across all four days, whilst The Namatjira (short course) features stages of 11km – 31km with a total of 80km across the four days.

Run Larapinta Stage Race

Keen trail runners can also enter individual stages of the race with this option especially popular among local participants.

“You don’t need to be an elite runner, or a runner with a long list of ultra-marathon race finishes to your name. You just need to be an active person who is willing to chip away at the course and keep moving from start to finish” said Maffett.

Previous participants have nothing but positive enthusiasm for the stage-race over its 5 year history:

Karen, a 2019 participant said, “This was an amazing way to see a beautiful part of Outback Australia. The trail is tough, but the beauty of the area, its vastness and majesty made every step worthwhile. I feel privileged to have seen a special part of our country and met some lovely people along way.”

Robyn, at 64 years of age from the 2018 stage race said, “This was one of the most enjoyable and challenging experiences in my life. The comradeship of the other competitors and the event organisers left you feeling like you had been friends forever.”

Andrew from 2019 said “I loved this event. It challenged me and I hope I am a better prepared runner because of it. The landscape we ran through is unbelievably beautiful and inspiring. The event organisation was flawless and allowed us runners to just get on and enjoy ourselves.”

2021 participants are encouraged to enter early to avoid missing out; and to look at extending their stay in the area, making it a memorable holiday with numerous organised tours in the Outback on offer.
